Abstract

In Riau Province, the most extensive sago planting is in Kepulauan Meranti and Indragiri Hilir Districts. The sago commodity has great potential to be developed in Riau Province to support the community's economy and food security, however currently sago processing has not developed significantly. This research further examines the existing potential of sago plants and the potential of processed sago products in two sago centers in Riau to support the development of local non-rice carbohydrates. This research was conducted in Kepulauan Meranti and Indragiri Hilir Districts, which were selected based on purposive sampling, namely the two largest sago producing districts in Riau Province. The types of data collected are primary and secondary data. Primary data collection was carried out using in-depth interviews and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) methods.  The results of the research conclude that: (1) The potential and production of sago in two districts, namely Kepulauan Meranti and Indragiri Hilir Districts, is relatively sufficient to supply the sago market in Indonesia, but there are no sago reserves to guarantee the supply of sago as a raw material for local carbohydrates in Riau Province and ( 2) There is a difference in data on the availability of sago for consumption in Riau Province between the 2022 Food Materials Balance (NBM) data, namely 37.22 kg/capita/year and the results of field research, which ranges from 4.25 – 8.50 kg/capita/year . This difference is due to the fact that there is a fairly large percentage of wet sago and dry sago taken out of Kepulauan Meranti and Indragiri Hilir districts that has not been recorded.
