Utilization Of Canals In Peatlands For The Development Of Fish Farming In The District Of Pelalawan

Abstract

Canals are built as water reserves for plantation areas, addressing forest and land fires and transportation facilities. In addition, canals can be utilized to improve the economy of the community through fish farming.The objective of the study was to identify of canals that could be utilized for the development of fish farming, and to assess the quality of water and fish farming on canals in the peat area.This research was conducted in Pelalawan Regency, Riau Province. The results showed the total length of canals in Pelalawan Regency along 4,730,958 meters, consisting of IUPHHK permit is 3,071,338 meters, HGU permit is 726,380 meters and community canals along 933.240 meters.Community-managed canals that can be utilized for fish farming business are about 1% of 933,240 meters or 9,332 meters.The water quality in the canals consists of pH ranging from 3.9-4.7, temperature 26-31oC, dissolved oxygen 2.50-2.80 ppm, ammonia 0.43-0.58 and brightness25-30 cm. Fish that can be maintained is catfish (Clarias gariepinus) with a density of 150/m2 (300/container) with cultivation container is a modification cage that is the bottom and part of the wall covered by a board covered with plastic, while other fish species are Toman which is relatively easy in its maintenance.Based on the analysis obtained absolute weight 136.5 g, daily growth rate of 7.6%, 91% survival rate and feed conversion 0.8 for catfish (catfish).
