Abstract

The high amount of sago waste generated in the centers of sago production at the district of Meranti Islands are still not used optimally and many are discharged into waters that can cause environmental pollution. One effort that can be done to reduce the environmental pollution caused by sago waste is by utilizing it as an alternative raw material in making fish feed. The aim of this study was to determine the potential of the sago waste in Meranti Islands district, making fish feed formulations with sago waste, and to test the growth of the fish using a feed mixture sago waste. Primary data were obtained from observations in the field, laboratory analysis, and testing of fish growth. Sago production in Meranti Islands district around 198.162 tons / year by solid waste such as sago waste about 14% of total production. Sago dregs available continuously making it possible to be used as raw material for fish feed. Proximate analysis results in a dry weight of sago waste showed that the protein content of corn dregs relatively low, ranging from 0.96 - 1:01%. Sago dregs can provide relatively high energy of carbohydrates in the form of extract materials without nitrogen (BETN) with a content ranging from 72.13 - 80.76%. Test results show that by using feed from sago dregs, the weight gain of Nile tilapia is greater (26.5 g) than African catfish (1.2 g). Thus the amount of sago dregs can be used for herbivorous fish higher than carnivorous fish.
